Vicuñas: The vicuña is the wild ancestor of the alpaca and is known for producing some of the finest fibres in the world. This delicate and graceful animal is the smallest of the camelids, with a rich cinnamon coat that lightens to a soft white underneath. Vicuñas are highly protected due to their once dwindling numbers, with conservation efforts helping to ensure their survival. They inhabit the high Andean altitudes, where their luxurious fleece provides essential warmth.

Alpacas: Domesticated for thousands of years by the indigenous peoples of the Andes, alpacas are cherished for their exquisite fleece, which comes in two types: Huacaya, which is dense and soft, and Suri, known for its long, silky locks. Alpacas are smaller than llamas, with a friendly and docile nature, making them popular not just in South America but globally, as pets, fibre producers, and show animals. Their fleece, available in a wide range of natural colours, from white and various shades of brown to black, is prized for its softness, warmth, and hypoallergenic qualities.

Camelids in the UK: While llamas and alpacas are more commonly found on farms and as part of family homesteads across the UK, guanacos and vicuñas represent the wild spirit of the Andes, captivating the imagination of those interested in conservation and the preservation of these magnificent creatures. Each member of the camelid family offers a unique glimpse into the adaptation and survival of species in diverse environments, from the rugged Andean mountains to the pastoral landscapes of Britain.

Through "Glamping with Llamas," we celebrate the connection between these remarkable animals and the people who come to learn, relax, and explore the countryside.
